World Environment Day is a great time to explore options that prioritise sustainability while consistently taking initiatives to save the environment.

Taking action for the planet, ending plastic pollution slowly and surely

At McDonald’s India, we understand that action, hope, and optimism drive change. There are many ways to protect the environment and our planet.

Considering the theme of World Environment Day 2025 #BeatPlasticPollution, here are some incredible measures we’ve been able to implement:

🌍 We’ve eliminated single-use consumer-facing plastic packaging across operations and implemented efficient logistics for plastic crate returns and responsible oil recycling.

🌎 We are ensuring the disposal of an equivalent amount of plastic under the EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) programme.

🌏 There’s been a 100% elimination of single-use plastics from our customer-facing packaging. It’s been replaced with environment-friendly equivalents such as wood, PLA, or paper – including biodegradable corn starch and FSC®-certified paper. We use EZ delivery bottles to deliver cold beverages.

🌍 Food, beverages, paper, and plastic waste generated at our restaurants are segregated and recycled by relevant third parties.

🌎 Over 1,00,000 kg of plastic has been recycled by us in the last 2 years.

🌏 Our plastic waste remains minimal due to the elimination of single-use plastics, complemented by our transition to paper-based packaging solutions.

🌍 E-waste is sent to certified third-party vendors for safe disposal.

🌎 We advocate for drip irrigation among resource providers to enhance resource efficiency and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Our REPLACE > RECYCLE > REUSE > REDUCE code of ethics

Energy Management Systems (EMS) are used in our restaurants to help convert used cooking oils into bio-diesel for use in our trucks! RSPO Mass Balance certified palm oil is sourced for our operations. EMS helps in real-time monitoring, thereby controlling energy usage.

Temperature cloud controllers are used to create the desired control temperature whilst maintaining the air-conditioning. Similarly, auto on/off controllers are used across high energy-consuming kitchen equipment in our restaurants.

We have pledged to be carbon neutral by 2050.

We use evaporative air-cooling kitchen systems and economisers. We use LED bulbs and order assembly table sets, and we’ve installed solar roof top panels in select McDonald’s restaurants. We also have motion sensors in the back areas of our stores to control lighting consumption wastage.

We’ve reduced our carbon footprint, enhancing operational and cost efficiencies. We have waterless urinals + low-flow aerator sprays in our restaurants to reduce our water consumption. Reverse osmosis (RO) reject water is repurposed for use in our restaurants’ rest-rooms.

Finally, we believe in local produce as the way forward – helping us reduce import costs and wastage. Global Good Agriculture Practices Farm Standards are followed across the fresh produce farms that we work with. We use Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee beans too. ☕

Important numbers for World Environment Day: Responsible actions, sustainable growth

We are proud of our 10,229 TCO₂ GHG emissions savings and the 30 million litres of water, saved.
