McDonald’s, and so many core emotions, feelings, and memories in you get activated at the thought or sight of anything McDonald’s! From the first time you stepped into a McDonald’s restaurant to the birthday parties attended there, your favourite meals and get-togethers, and the Happy Meal books and toys collected over the years… The McDonald’s love is universal.
April 15, being McDonald’s Day, felt like a good time to talk about Ray Kroc, the man that helped make McDonald’s history. 🍔🍟
Thanks to Ray Kroc, we know the joy a McDonald’s outlet can evoke!
- Ray Kroc, a native Chicagoan, had an interest in and flair for business from the get-go! He was a real-estate salesman, a paper-cup salesman, and the exclusive distributor for a blender called the multimixer.
- In 1954, something interesting caught Ray’s eye at a burger restaurant he visited… 8 of his multimixer blenders were in use, there. The restaurant belonged to two brothers, you can guess who – Maurice and Richard McDonald.
- Impressed by the assembly-line format to prepare and sell burgers, fries and shakes that the McDonald brothers were using, Ray had a brainwave. Setting up a chain of drive-in restaurants based on this format. Woo-hoo, McDonald’s Drive Thru!
- Not long after, Ray paid the McDonald brothers a franchise fee, and the first McDonald’s restaurant was opened on April 15, 1955, in Des Plaines, Illinois. Ray ran an old-school style poster ad in the newspaper inviting families and all to visit McDonald’s on Opening Day.
- With its popularity rising, Ray began to expand McDonald’s, selling franchises on the condition that the owners manage their restaurants.
- This paved the way for the automation and standardisation of McDonald’s operations, no matter where the restaurant was based. A training programme for owner-managers was instituted by Ray to ensure this.
The McDonald’s story is iconic
Imagine a single restaurant beloved in one place, now enjoyed by millions of McDonald’s fans all over! Thank you, Ray Kroc, and Maurice and Richard McDonald. Your big dreams made Big Mac and many other memorable flavours, menu items, and most importantly, moments. ❤️💛🍔🍟
The McDonald’s story is incomplete without… You
It’s impossible to think about the global dining culture and not recall McDonald’s. It’s cool to think that literally, or well, geographically, anyone can enjoy eating at McDonald’s, the same way you do! We sure love the different McDonald’s customisations across countries, that being said. McAloo Tikki Burger®, hello! 🤩
