Take a Happy Meal box and make it into Virtual Reality goggles. McDonald’s in Sweden decided to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Happy Meals with a little gaming experience. Timed to coincide with the Swedish “Sportlov” recreational holiday, during which many families go skiing, McDonald’s created a ski-themed VR game, “Slope Stars,” for use with the goggles. The goggles, though, work on any mobile VR experience. Incidentally, “Slope Stars”, a 360 degree VR skiing game, is endorsed by the Swedish National Ski Team.
VR provides “a really exciting opportunity to connect families in digital times,” Jeff Jackett, marketing director at McDonald’s Sweden, tells AdWeek. “Parents can learn more about their children’s knowledge and experience of the digital world. And purposeful gaming can also be a great joint activity that helps families interact on equal terms.”
A Happy Meal Box is actually perfect to make a basic headset. The box is stronger than a typical paper bag and with the help of perforations at the right places, can be easily folded and reshaped.Turning the iconic red boxes into Happy Goggles follows a very simple procedure. One just needs to fold the box after tearing along the perforated lines and insert the VR lenses and a smartphone.
For now Happy Goggles are only available in Sweden and depending on its success, McDonald’s intends to introduce it in other countries in near future.
